Five minutes standing upright is usually enough, and it makes a noticeable difference to how the first half of the pod tastes. Draw on a dry wick and you scorch it immediately, after which the flavour never fully recovers, and on a sharp fruit a scorched note is particularly obvious because there is no sweetness to hide behind.

The first few draws should also be gentler and shorter than your normal ones. Let the pod settle into its rhythm rather than pulling hard on it straight away.

Refilling a BM6000 or Nera 15k pod

The pod-plus-refill format is the main reason people choose these platforms, and it is simple enough, but a few habits make it go better.

• Top up before the pod runs completely dry, not after. A wick that has been run empty has usually already taken some damage.
• Fill slowly and stop short of the very top so there is still an air gap for the pod to breathe.
• Wipe any liquid off the outside and the contacts before you reseat the pod.
• Give it the same five minutes to settle that you would give a fresh pod.
• Keep the refill bottle closed between uses. An open bottle of nic salt will oxidise and darken faster than a sealed one.

Storage, heat and light

Store pods and bottles somewhere cool, dark and upright. Heat and daylight both push e-liquid to darken and the flavour to dull, and a sharp fruit shows that degradation sooner than a heavy dessert does because there is less going on to mask it. A drawer or a cupboard is fine. A car windscreen, a windowsill or a bag left in the sun is not.

When a pineapple pod starts tasting wrong

Two different problems get confused here. A coil that is worn out tastes muted, slightly burnt, and gets worse with every draw.
