Priming and first use

Whether the pod came prefilled or you have just topped it up from a refill bottle, give the wick a few minutes to saturate before the first draw. A dry or partly dry wick heated hard produces a harsh, burnt note that does not go away afterwards, because the damage is to the coil rather than the liquid. Two or three minutes standing upright is usually enough.

Refilling without ruining the pod

• Fill to the marked level, not above it. Overfilling pushes liquid into the airway and causes gurgling and leaking.
• Top up before the pod runs completely dry rather than after. Running a pod to empty is the fastest way to burn a coil.
• Hold the pod upright and add liquid slowly down the side of the reservoir, letting the air escape as you go.
• Close the fill port properly and wipe any liquid off the outside before reinserting the pod.
• Let it stand for a couple of minutes after refilling, as above.

Storing pods and bottles

Heat and light are what degrade e-liquid. Both sealed pods and 10ml bottles keep best somewhere cool, dark and dry: a drawer or a cupboard rather than a car dashboard, a windowsill or a coat pocket in summer. Liquid that has been sat in heat tends to darken and lose the brighter top notes first, which in an apple flavour means the crisp element fades and the sweetness flattens. Keep bottles upright, keep caps tight, and keep all vaping products well out of reach of children and animals.
